  1. Hayley Lewis

26 year old Olympic 800m swimmer.

A decade ago she was the sweetheart of the nation when she won an amazing five gold medals at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland. The following year at the World Championships in Perth she collected the full set - gold in the 200m freestyle, silver in the 400m freestyle and bronze in the 200m butterfly. In 1992 at the Barcelona Olympics she won a silver medal in the 800m freestyle and a bronze in the 400m when still just 18-year-old. She seemed destined for a glittering career. But somewhere along the line Lewis fell out of love with swimming. The medal winning performances didn’t dry up as a result - she won two gold, two silver and a bronze medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria and a silver medal at the World Championships in Rome the same year - but the performances seemed that little bit more laboured. The twinkle in her eye was fading, the spring in the step subsiding.

By 1996, and Atlanta, she had reached the lowest point in her career. At the trials she said her improved performance had come because she was enjoying her swimming again.

    Has a son, Jacob Joe.
