- Natalie Hunter
Natalie Hunter was born in 1968. Height: 173cm. Weight: 67 kilograms.
Four months after Natalie Hunter first sat in a kayak, she found herself competing in the national 500 metres semi-final. Halfway through the race, she fell overboard. Fortunately for her, she persevered after this less-than- auspicious introduction to the elite level of kayaking and developed into a strong medal contender for Alanta.
Hunter's rise to the top of her chosen sport is no surprise to those who know her. As one of the first female competitors in the male-dominated sport of surf lifesaving in the 1980s, Hunter (nee Hood) became something of a role model to young women when she won the Australian Surf Lifesaver of the Year award in 1990 for her contribution to the sport.
Two years later, Hunter had finished her medical studies and residency at the Geelong Hospital and was on the verge of breaking into the Australian kayak team. While the training was tough, she always believed in her ability."Once I started paddling, I knew I had the ability to do it. I got into an elite way of thinking right from the start, as I was training with the Victorian Institute of Sport squad."
The VIS squad included world champion Martin Hunter (no relation), who no doubt influenced Hunter's steady rise through the ranks of Australian kayaking. "If you spend time with mediocre people you won't get far, " she said. "You are very much influenced by the people around you."
Hunter set herself realistic goals in 1991: to make the 1993 world championship team, once she had finished her hospital residency. She was selected for the world championships and finished a credible eighth as part of the K4 500 metres team. With Hunter an established member of the K4 crew, the Australians have finished seventh and fourth respectively in the past two world titles. Last year they missed a medal by just 0.14 of a second.
The improvement of women's kayaking in Australia, says Hunter, has resulted from a decision in 1989 to develop the sport and encourage female participation at elite level. "In the 1980s there were few women chosen on Australian teams. Often those that went would be the only female in the team, which was pretty tough in a sport where women had little respect from the male competitors. "The women have just started improving in the last few years. Once the decision was made to send full women's teams in 1989, the standard really improved. Another reason for the improvement was the arrival from Sweden in 1992 of Hunter's current coach, Angela Anderson. Anderson was a dual medallist in 1984 and has competed in the past four Olympics. Her experience and guidance has given the women a lot of confidence in their ability and goals for Atlanta.
"In the past," said Hunter, "our teams would be happy to have made the final at world championships or Olympics. Now, after finishing fourth last year, we're so close that I cannot see us not winning a medal at Atlanta."
Before Atlanta, however, are the all-important Olympic trials.Originally planned as a series of three events over the summer, this weekend's second event was cancelled due to the late completion of the Olympic course in Sydney. The national championships in early March now become the make-or-break races for Australian's kayak paddlers. After the trials, it will be time to focus on the Games, at which the European nations have traditionally dominated men's and women's kayaking. The emergence of the Chinese women at last year's world championships in Germany had disturbing similarities to their emergence in swimming and track and field in recent years. "The Chinese really came out of the woodwork last year, " says Hunter. "You can't accuse people of taking drugs until they're caught, but a number of their men were caught at last year's Asian Games."
Despite the presence of the Chinese, the Australian women have qualified in all events for Atlanta, ensuring a full team will be sent to the Games for the first time. The men have so far qualified in all but two events. For a woman who set goals in 1991 to be competing in Atlanta this year, Hunter's focus now extends no further than July. "My short-term goal, of course, is to make the team. From there, I want the Olympic medal. To me, life doesn't exist after July 1996. I just haven't thought about it."
Event: K4 500 metres. Currently ranked fourth in the world.
Career achievements: Fourth placing in 1995 world championships.
1996 goals: Firstly Olympic team selection. Secondly an Olympic medal.

- Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, 20:06:67.
Elegant redhead Nicole Kidman, known as one of Hollywood's top Australian imports, was actually born in Honolulu, Hawaii to Anthony (a biochemist and clinical psychologist) and Janelle (a nursing instructor) Kidman. The family moved almost immediately to Washington, D.C., where Nicole's father pursued his research on breast cancer, then, three years later, made the pilgrimage to her parents' native Sydney.
Young Nicole's first love was ballet, but she eventually took up mime and drama as well (her first stage role was a bleating sheep in an elementary school Christmas pageant). In her adolescent years, acting edged out the other arts and became a kind of refuge, as her classmates sought out fun in the sun, the fair-skinned Kidman retreated to dark rehearsal halls to practice her craft. She worked regularly at the Philip Street Theater, where she once received a personal letter of praise and encouragement from audience member Jane Campion (then a film student).
Kidman eventually dropped out of high school to pursue acting full-time. She broke into movies at age 16, landing a role in the Australian holiday favorite Bush Christmas (1983). That appearance touched off a flurry of film and TV offers, including a lead in BMX Bandits (1983) and a turn as a schoolgirl-turned-protester in the miniseries "Vietnam" (1986) (mini) (for which she won her first Australian Film Institute Award). With the help of an American agent, she eventually made her US debut opposite Sam Neill in the at-sea thriller Dead Calm (1989).
Kidman's next casting coup scored her more than exposure. While starring as Tom Cruise's doctor/love interest in the racetrack romance Days of Thunder (1990), she won over the Hollywood hunk hook, line, and sinker. After a whirlwind courtship (and decent box office returns), the couple wed on December 24, 1990. Determined not to let her new marital statusovershadow her fledgling career, the actress pressed on. She appeared as a catty high school senior in the Australian film Flirting (1991), then as Dustin Hoffman's moll in the gangster flick Billy Bathgate (1991). She reunited with Cruise for Far and Away (1992), the story of young Irish lovers who flee to America in the late 1800s, and starred opposite Michael Keaton in the tear-tugger My Life (1993).
Despite her steady employment, critics and moviegoers still hadn't quite warmed to Kidman as a leading lady. She tried to spice up her image by seducing Val Kilmer in Batman Forever (1995), but achieved her real breakthrough with Gus Van Sant's To Die for (1995). As a fame-crazed housewife determined to eliminate any obstacle in her path, Kidman proved that she had an impressive range and deadly comic timing. She took home a Golden Globe and several critics' awards for the performance.
In 1996, Kidman stepped into a corset to work with her countrywoman and onetime admirer, Jane Campion, on the adaptation of Henry James's Portrait of a Lady, The (1996). A few months later, she tore across the screen as a nuclear weapons expert in Peacemaker, The (1997), adding "action star" to her professional repertoire. She and Cruise then disappeared into a notoriously long, secretive shoot for Stanley Kubrick's sexual thriller Eyes Wide Shut (1999). The couple's on-screen shenanigans prompted an increase in public speculation about their sex life (rumors had long been circulating that their marriage was a cover-up for Cruise's homosexuality); tired of denying tabloid attacks, they successfully sued 'The Star' for a story alleging that they needed a sex therapist to coach them through love scenes.
Family life has always been a priority for Kidman. Born to social activists (mom was a feminist, dad a labor advocate), Nicole and her little sister, Antonia, discussed current events around the dinner table and participated in their parents' campaigns by passing out pamphlets on street corners. When her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, 17-year-old Nicole stopped working and took a massage course so that she could provide physical therapy (her mom eventually beat the cancer). She and Cruise adopted two children: Isabella Jane (born in 1993) and Connor Antony (born 1995). Despite their rock-solid image, the couple announced in early 2001 that they were separating due to career conflicts.
Spouse:Tom Cruise (24 December 1990 - 5 February 2001) (divorced), 2 adopted children.
(1999) Chosen by People Magazine as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World.
(1996) Chosen by People Magazine as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world.
Wore a corset while filming Portrait of a Lady, The (1996) to take her waist down to 19".
Spent two weeks in bed after filming of Portrait of a Lady, The (1996) diagnosed as suffering from "emotional stress".
Once dated Tom Burlinson.
Oct 1999 - Crusader against child abuse. "Children should be allowed to grow up without fear of cruelty."
Personal quotes: "Every day there is a compromise. Living with somebody requires a lot of understanding. But I love being married. I really love it. Sometimes I try to downplay it a bit because people are like, 'God you guys.' I just feel so fortunate that I have found someone who will put up with me and stay with me." - on her marriage to Tom Cruise - August 2000
On husband Tom Cruise: "I wouldn't want to be married to me, but luckily he does."

- Nikka Costa
Nikka Costa was born on June 4, 1972).
Nikka Costa's career began at age five when she sang with Don Ho in Hawaii for a Christmas release produced by her father, Don Costa, who had worked with the likes of Frank Sinatra and Paul Anka. In her father's home recording studio, the young Costa would hang out with stars like Quincy Jones and Sammy Davis Jr. Concerts and performing have represented some of the most significant moments in Costa's life.
Although she was raised and lives in Los Angeles, she was born in Tokyo during the Tokyo Music Festival. At age seven, she sang "On My Own" with the full Don Costa Orchestra as the encore of one of his Milan shows. The crowd and Italian press reacted with enthusiasm to her performance, which led to her first record. It was released in Europe, Israel, Sough and Central America, where it reached platinum status in each territory.
Following the release of her second non-U.S. release Fairy Tales, Costa took a four-year break from recording when her father died. She then got back in the business at age 14 with a record for a small German recording label before moving to Los Angeles.
In the following years, she moved to Australia to hone her chops. She gigged incessantly, developed her own live show, and started to seriously write songs. Costa landed a deal with Mushroom Records and released Butterfly Rocket, which earned her a nomination for Best New Artist at the Australian Recording Industry Awards.
Music exec Dominique Trenier (D'Angelo, R. Kelly) then took Costa under his wing, signing her to his label Cheeba Sound. Trenier hooked her up with album producers Justin Stanley and DJ Mark Ronson, and the three created Everybody Got Their Something--a fierce fusion of rock and soul. Costa wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album. Costa also proved she can still tear it up on stage when she recently appeared on the season finale of The Chris Rock Show--her first performance in over three years.
Nikka's first album for Cheeba Sound (and U.S. Debut), Everybody Got Their Something, is scheduled for release on May 22nd, 2001. The music video for her first single, Like a Feather (which you may recognize from a Tommy Hilfiger commercial), premiered on MTV on May 7th and a song called "Push & Pull" made it onto the soundtrack of the film Blow, released a month ago.
