- Susie O`Neill
During her swimming career, Susie O'Neill was regarded as one of the world's best, a freestyle and butterfly specialist and a member of the Australian team for 12 years. She is the 1998 world champion in the 200m Butterfly and in May 2000 set a world record for that event. She is also the Olympic champion in the 200m Freestyle.
She was born on 2 August 1973 in Mackay, a town in Australia's Queensland. She started swimming at the age of 8 and was first coached by Bernie Wakefield. Susie started with freestyle and at age 12, turned to backstroke. That same year, she won the Australian age title. She started butterfly when she was 14 and hasn't looked back since. She is now a swimmer in the famous Queensland Commercial Club and is coached by Scott Volkers, who also coaches breaststroker, Sam Riley. She joined Volker's squad after the World Championships in Rome 1994.
In Atlanta '96, Susie proved to the rest of the world that she was up there with the best of them. She won a gold medal for the 200m butterfly, her favourite event, a silver in the 4x100m individual medley relay and a bronze in th 4x200m freestyle relay.
Upon returning to Australia, she was given $57 000 from the Australian Olympic Committee's Medal Incentive Scheme, $45 000 from the AOC's Medal Reward Scheme, $51 000 from Telstra for her medals, and a $8 500 training grant from Australian Swimming Inc.
Susie backed up her success in Atlanta with success in Perth during the 8th World Swimming Championships. Competing in 6 events, incluing relays, she won 4 medals (1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze).
At the Australian Championships in 1998, she won 4 gold and 1 silver, making her the most successful swimmer at the championships. She also won her 30th national title, coming close to beating the Australian record set by Frank Beaurepaire in the 1920s of 33 national titles. Susie also did very well at the Commonwealth Games that year, winning 6 gold medals, making her the most successful athlete at the Games with 10 golds in 3 consecutive games.
After the Commonwealth Games, Susie took a break and on October 2, married long-time boyfriend, Dr Cliff Farley, in Brisbane. Guests at the wedding included coach Scott Volkers and Australian teammate, Daniel Kowalski. The happy couple then went on a one month-long honeymoon in the Maldives.
At the end of 1998, Susie also released her book, Choose To Win. Usually a very pivate person, this new book sheds light on the highs and lows of Susie's career and her relationships with coaches and fellow swimmers. Definitely an interesting read. Her interests include watching movies and going to the beach.
In 1999, Susie competed in the Pan Pacific Championships in Sydney where she picked up 2 gold medals and 4 silvers. She also competed at the Australian Shortcourse Championships at the AIS in Canberra where she set a new 200m butterfly world record. Her most recent success was at the US Open held in December in Austin, Texas. She picked up gold medals for the 200m fly, 4x100m medley relay and the 4x200m freestyle relay. She also came 2nd in the 200m freestyle and the 100m fly.
At the Australian Selection Trials for the Olympic Games, Susie achieved a life-long goal by breaking Mary T. Meagher's 18-year old world record in the 200m fly with a time of 2:05.81. She also won the 200m freestyle and now has 35 national titles, surpassing Frank Beaurepaire's record. She continued her good form in the Olympics, winning gold in the 200m Freestyle and silver in the 200m Butterfly, 4 x 200m Freestyle and 4 x 100m Medley relays. During the Games, she was also elected to the IOC and the Athletes' Commission.
In November 2000, Susie annouced her retirement from competitive swimming. Many have speculated that she would retire but believed she would do so in front of her home crowd during the Goodwill Games 2001 in Brisbane, Australia. Susie's involvement in the IOC, however, will ensure that she will continue being the wonderful ambassador for Australian sport that she has been up till now. At the Australian Swimmer of the Year Awards on March 17, 2001, Susie was named Swimmers' Swimmer of the Year and along with fellow team retirees, presented with a special award recognising her contribution to the sport.

Sarah Peirse, an award-winning New Zealand actress, has a broad range of experience both as an actress and as a director. She was the winner of the Best Actress Award in 1983 for her work in the period television drama "A Woman of Good Character," and Best Supporting Actress in 1988 for her performance in the motion picture "The Navigator." She has also appeared in the television series "The Champion." Peirse has also performed extensively with the Melbourne Theater Company, appearing in lead roles in "Three Sisters," "Cabaret," "The Secret Rapture," "South Pacific," "A Streetcar Named Desire," and "The Rose Tattoo." She attended The Drama School and spent many years at both Theater Corporate and the Mercury Theater, where she became Associate Director. Peirse has also directed at the Adelaide State Theater. She currently lives in Australia. Sarah Peirse also acted as drama coach for Melanie Lynskey. For Jackson, there was only one choice for the part of Pauline's mother, Honora Parker. Jackson had fallen in love with Sarah Peirse's acting when she starred in the New Zealand period drama, "A Woman of Good Character." "I regard Sarah's performance in "Heavenly Creatures" as a real triumph--the strength of her performance turns the story into a true tragedy. It was very important to Sarah that she honor the memory of Pauline's mother, and I think that this is evident in her compassionate and intelligent reading of the character," states Jackson.

- Simone Robertson
Simone, a trained jazz and tap dancer as well as an actor on shows like Neighbours, Kelly and Skirts, went along to the audition for Breakers believing she didn't stand a chance. That, she believes, is how she ended up with the role. "I was really calm and collected about it," says Simone. "I was so relaxed and happy and it just sort of happened."
She didn't know a great deal about the series before it began, but on reading a few of the scripts, was absolutely delighted to accept. "It's not Shakespeare," she says, "but it's different from other soaps. It's a little bit more centred towards the 19-year-old age group, whereas other soaps you're either an adult or you're at school. It's also more based around work with a wide range of plots. It's really teaching me a hell of a lot."
Starting in acting at the age of 11 as a Girl Guide on The Bartons, Simone's career has evolved steadily both in Australia and overseas. At 13, she played Max von Sydows' grand daughter in the movie Father. More recently, she did a two-year stint in Neighbours, also as a mother. In Breakers, acting with one of two twin girls in many scenes, Simone finds she's invariably kept on her toes. "There's a little bit of ad-libbing where kids are involved because they often don't do what you expect. They might walk off the set or do something different, so you have to keep up with that."
Simone has been studying occupational therapy and speech pathology before taking on the role of Monique. "I won't have time for that now," she says. "But that's OK. I can always go back later. Right now, I'm enjoying the show too much."

- Simone Kessel
Simone Kessel has starred in many of the television series made in her home country, New Zealand. This includes the syndicated worldwide hits Hercules; and Xena: Warrior Princess; as well as High Tide; Mountain Due on the Edge; Adventures of the Black Stallion; What Now; and Homeward Bound.
Other television appearances include GP and Heartbreak High, and the movies McLeod's Daughters; Return to Treasure Island; and Mya Wahine.
Playing Gabrielle in THE VIOLENT EARTH has been one of Simone's most tragic characters. "Gabrielle is a subservient Kanak maid who ends up deserted by her true love, Tom" (Andrew McFarlane), explains Kessel. "After giving birth to a beautiful baby, she is banished back to her tribal village with baby Anna." Indeed, Anna's family background causes anguish all round in Part Three, but as Gabrielle's daughter, she remains full of compassion and understanding for her people. "Anna becomes the woman Gabrielle could never be," concludes Kessel.

Fiona Cassidy's parents had high hopes for their youngest child. With her two brothers already rising young lawyers, the distinguished judge and his society beauty wife assumed a private education and finishing school would naturally lead to a career in the family law firm too. Instead, Fiona opted to become a cop, living in a converted boatshed, driving a battered VW and dating a diver.
With that kind of privileged background, however, Fiona feels she has to try that little bit harder than her working class colleagues to prove she belongs. She's tough, she's adventurous - she's still a competition triathlete - and she's beautiful, although she doesn't really know it.
In real life, Sophie Heathcote's in awe of her character. "Fiona would function in an emergency far better than me," she says. "I would probably just stand there screaming. She's self-sufficient, with drive and ambition. She had to take on the responsibility of being a police officer and is in a very powerful position. She really is an inspirational person."
But Sophie does have more in common with her character than she perhaps realises. First of all, they both have a rebellious streak - Sophie herself left home in Melbourne at the age of just 15. Then there's the blokey world of the police service: growing up with four brothers wasn't bad training. Yet where their two personalities do diverge is in the love of a life on the water. Sophie's first day out on the harbour lasted eight hours, and it took her some time to find her sea legs.
Fiona's strengths, however, are what attracted Sophie to the role and won her over despite fears of being typecast in such a long-running show. "it's a huge commitment and you have to really think about it because actors dream of playing a million different characters," she says. "What if I get typecast as a police officer and can't get any other parts?"
"But it's exciting to create a brand new show, to get given a character to mould and create. I'm playing a police officer but I am also having a relationship in the series. It's great to be able to show both sides of the character. We are all full of contradictions and you want to be able to show them."
Sophie graduated from NIDA in late 1994 and, although one of the youngest of the principal cast of WATER RATS at just 25, she has already chalked up an impressive slate of work. Her television credits have included BORDERTOWN, GP, the English mini-series SOLDIER, SOLDIER and THE VALLEY BETWEEN (formerly SUN ON THE STUBBLE). She hopes her recent achievements will soon overtake the public perception of her as the young regular in A COUNTRY PRACTICE, with people realising she's come a long way since. "I feel really lucky to have found a profession I love working in," she says, "and WATER RATS seems to have everything going for it."

- Sherrie Austin
Sherrié Austin has spent the last twelve months of her life in a kind of self-imposed detoxification of the soul. With her new CD Followin' a Feelin', Austin has re-emerged with an emotional and musical journey that vividly captures the examination and acceptance of life choices we all make that are vital to our happiness.
Although Austin had co-written much of her previous two albums, this is also her most personal project to date because it follows her path of self-exploration that began when she took a year off from touring and recording to focus solely on songwriting. For the first time in years, she wrote just for the sake of the song, without being influenced by industry standards, record company approval or radio restrictions.
"I thought the name Followin' a Feelin' was the right title for this CD because it was all about coming right from the gut," she says. "There was no other thought involved other than just pure songwriting. 'Followin' a Feelin'' is about my experience of taking a year off and figuring out what I wanted to do. The verse is exactly what has been going on in my head: you've got to let go of stuff, get over stuff, make new plans when the old ones don't work out. Most of all, you've just got to go with your gut."
Raised in Australia, Austin was heavily influenced, at a young age, by such country greats as Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and Skeeter Davis at a young age. By 15, she was performing "Jolene" in front of enthusiastic crowds and opened for Johnny Cash on his Australian tour. Leading virtually a gypsy existence, her parents packed a tent in the back of their work van and drove her from show to show, canvassing the continent one country music concert and festival at a time.
The family moved to California when she was still a teenager so that she could pursue her dream of singing country music. She found success in both singing and acting, but she never quite felt at home there. Increasingly drawn to Nashville, she packed up her suitcase, a guitar and enough money to live on for two months and headed to a town where she knew no one. The only thing on her mind was songwriting; it had never occurred to her that she could sing her own songs.
In just nine months, she had landed both a publishing and record deal and was caught up in the whirlwind of a blossoming recording career. She released her debut album, Words, in 1997 and quickly became recognized for such hits as "Lucky In Love", "One Solitary Tear" and "Put Your Heart Into It." With the help of such hits as "Never Been Kissed" and "Little Bird", her 1999 CD, Love in the Real World brought her an Academy of Country Music Association nomination for Best New Female Artist and a #1 spot on the sales, video and dance charts for the single of "Never Been Kissed".
But this success came with a cost. The constant touring and media demands took her away from the one thing that brought her to Nashville - songwriting -- and she lost a bit of herself along the way. So when Tim DuBois, one of Austin's biggest supporters, left Arista Records, she was given the option of staying or being released from her contract. While she was grateful to Arista, she knew what she had to do, so she walked away from the label.
She immersed herself in songwriting for the next year, collaborating with different writers and experiencing with new sounds and styles. Although she was pursued by several major labels, she decided instead to form a partnership with her publisher, Wrensong's Ree Guyer Buchanan, and release her third album on WE Records. This would ensure that she could deliver her music in its purest form, without dilution or compromise, directly to the listeners."
What has emerged is the next phase of her musical evolution. If Words was about the ending of love and Love in the Real World is about surviving, then Followin' a Feelin' is about thriving, healing and celebrating what you have. The title track says, "Sometimes you gotta lose yourself before you see the truth/ Sometimes you gotta let go of your dreams before they come back to you."
This project reveals a depth and introspection that has often been overshadowed by her timeless beauty. In a time when many are following in the footsteps of Shania Twain and Faith Hill in their quest for pop stardom, Austin is embracing the musical heritage of strong female singer/songwriters such as Emmylou Harris, Rosanne Cash and Mary-Chapin Carpenter. She co-wrote nine of its ten songs, and included her version of Dolly Parton's "Jolene", which she sings every night in her concerts. "Dolly Parton has been my biggest influence since I was a little girl," she says. "It was a daunting task, redoing "Jolene," and if I couldn't find another spin on the song, I didn't want to do a remake because that would have been insulting."
Austin broke industry rules by allowing her songs to be pitched to other artists while recording them herself. Four songs on the project have been cut by others, including Ronnie Milsap and her idol, Dolly Parton.
Austin has long been recognized for her wonderful crystalline soprano voice, but in 'Followin' a Feelin', she unveils the warmer sound of the low end of her vocal register. While this CD is much more traditionally country than her previous efforts, it's also quite diverse, from the Western swing sound of "Somethin' Missin' in the Kissin'", which would be right at home on any honky tonk jukebox, and the pure country "Goin', Goin', Gone," to "My Brilliant Mistake," which sounds like a cross between Sheryl Crow and Steely Dan, and "Time, Love & Money," which boasts a groove that was equally influenced by Joni Mitchell and Collective Soul.
"I just needed time off and energy to write and now I'm back where I belong," she says. "Through all of this, I've learned to be true to yourself, and if you follow your heart through life, you won't go wrong."
