  3. Tammin Sursok

Tammin was born on 19 August, 1983, in Johannesburg, South Africa, and her family moved to Australia when she was four years of age. Tammin is currently in Year 11 and studying by correspondence due to her Home and Away workload. Her favourite subjects are Art, Drama, English and History. Tammin studied drama at school and attended the Trinity Speech and Drama college of England where she received a high distinction in her final exam.

Tammin has appeared in various commercials, including a youth and alcohol advertisement, and started modelling a year ago. This is, however, Tammin’s first television role and, while it was quite an audition process, Tammin is thrilled to join the show. 'I was so excited when I heard I got the part. I couldn’t quite believe it. I was absolutely speechless. This is something I have always wanted to do and thought if I didn’t make it soon I never would, so it came at a good time,' she says. Tammin plays Dani Sutherland, who moves to Summer Bay with her family from the city. Her parents, Rhys (Michael Beckley) and Shelley (Paula Forrest), want their children to have a better lifestyle, so they decide to move to a place with a slower pace. Dani has two twin sisters, Kirsty (Christie Hayes) and Jade (Kate Garven). Like all kids, this has been a major time for adjustment time for all the girls, having to leave all their friends behind and move to a place where everybody knows your business. The move seems to have affected Dani the most, as she has had to leave her boyfriend behind and her city lifestyle. Tammin says of her character, Dani Sutherland, 'I love playing her because she has a bit of an edge. She is the type of character that you can really get your teeth into. You couldn’t call her boring.

  14. Tina Arena

    Birthname Filippina Arena.

Filippina (Pina for short) Lydia Arena was born November 1st, 1967, in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne, Australia. The middle child of older sister Nancy and younger sister Silvana, the Arena girls are from Italian descent.

Inspired to become a singer after hearing her sister's You're My World record, it was hard to ignore the talent that Tina was born with. She took singing lessons and at the age of 7, began her career as "Tiny Tina" on the Australian talent television show Young Talent Time.

After 9 years of improving her singing voice on the show, she left YTT in hopes of expanding her career and hopefully shedding the "Tiny Tina" image that she had become associated with. In search of work, Tina had to settle for the job offers that came her way, even if it meant less glamorous work such as singing jingles for commercials. Tina also worked at a Melbourne Insurance Company, but quickly realized that this was not what she was born to do, her real life aspiration was to sing.

Tina released her first single entitled "Turn Up the Beat", in 1985, but unfortunately it was less than memorable. She was back to square one; the same spot after having quit YTT, until she landed a gig at Melbourne's Grainstore Tavern, playing with another band.

Things soon started to pick up for Tina: she got the role of narrator in the Australian production of the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and in 1990, recorded her first album, Strong as Steel. The album became gold certified, and spawned such hits such as "I Need Your Body" (whose video made fans realize she has matured from her "Tiny Tina" days), "The Machine's Breaking Down", "Strong as Steel", and "Woman's Work/I Believe", all top 40 hits.

In 1992, Ralph Carr became Tina's manager and, a couple of years later, became her husband. Not only did he encourage her to write her own songs, he also advised her to release a single before releasing her next album, a method widely employed by recording artists today. The single "Chains" piqued the interest of fans and encouraged them to buy the album Don't Ask The release of Don't Ask in 1994 represented a new level of success for Tina, after having being signed with Sony. With singles like "Chains", "Sorrento Moon", and "Heaven Help My Heart", Tina became the Highest Selling Female Australian Artist in history.

In 1997, Tina released the album In Deep, which also saw a considerable amount of success, what with 1 million copies sold in France alone and it becoming the first album to reach No. 1 in Australia in a record amount of time. Tina also made herself heard with her work on the Mask of Zorro soundtrack. If you weren't using all your senses staring at Catherine Zeta-Jones on the big screen, you may have caught Tina's duet with Marc Anthony for the song "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You" on the film's soundtrack.

Tina (no longer married to Carr) is presently starring as Esmerelda in the musical Notre Dame de Paris.

A huge hit in Australia, Europe and Asia, Tina will surely cross the Atlantic and leave her mark on the American market the same way she took the other side of the world by storm.

  19. Toni Pearen

Toni Pearen was born in Sydney, 06:06:72.

    Hi there!

This is your friend Toni. Thanks so much for your letter and all your kind words of encouragement.Well, so much has happened over the last 23 years of my life, I'm not sure where to start. I suppose at the beginning is the best place.

I grew up in Sydney in the beach suburb of Cronulla, with my mum, dad, brother Adam and my poodle "Jedda". I have always loved, and retreated back to the beach when life gets too busy. While I was at school, it became very obvious that my hobby was fast overtaking every other aspect of my life, and that was performing. I began studying ballet & tap at five, then at eight years of age I joined the stables atteh Lynda Keane Talent School. For over ten years I studied dance, singing & drama intensely, involving myself in all aspects of the industry.

I'd perform in everything from my school talent quests, with good friend Jacqui Cowell (from Girlfriend [the girl group]), to a Royal Command Performance in front of the Queen. All these commitments left little time for boyfriends and parties, but I made up for that later. While sitting for my higher school certificate, I auditioned for the role of Toni Windsor in the popular Ch10 drama E-Street. I was lucky enough to clinch the role & proceeded to complete my HSC [high school certificate] while carrying an extraordinary lifestyle on the small screen. In three and a half years, I was pregnant, drunk, married, unfaithful, divorced and got to kiss every boy on the show... on the screen that is!

At the end of 1992, after hassling every record company around, witha demo of the band I was in, Mushroom Records called. They wanted to sign the band, but the band had split, so they offered me a solo deal. Well as you can probably imagine this was a dream come true, and as they say the rest is history. "In Your Room" was my first release, reaching top 10 and Gold Album status. "I Want You" also went gold. In the meantime, between the singles and the release of my first album "Intimate" I continued to pursue my other passion acting. I worked on the popular drama Home & Away. [for about a month or so]

I made two feature films "All Men Are Liars" soon to be released [plus soundtrack] and "The Bearfire Trilogy - On The Dead Side". [never finished]

I played Miranda in the cult musical "Return To The Forbidden Planet", the part required me to play a saxaphone (I took a crash course). I also hosted the 1993 Aust Music Awards with John Farnham & Fresh prince, also hosted Take 40 TV [on Ch10} and now host my own 24hr music channel, Galaxy TV's Red.

All work & no play I hear you say! well not true. In my spare time I love to spend hours chatting with my friends and then dance the night away. I love to relax by massage, watching films, reading and eating good healthy food. I am a compulsive shopper and love to stay up late while the rest of the world dreams. I hate to throw anything out and I have collections of antique picture frames, candles, books and second hand clothing.

Music is my true passion and my CD and record collection takes priority over all else. My favourite artists are marvin gaye, Lenny Kravitz, Aretha Franklin, KD Lang, Madonna, Kate Ceberano, Stevie Wonder and Seal.

I am fascinated and obsessed by the 1970's, everything from music to fashion, consequently my friends call me "Love Child". I love working in the city but like to escape to appreciate nature and kiss a tree.

So there is a brief summary of my life so far. So many great things and wonderful experiences. I thank you all for your support, you are one of the reasons why I continue to do what I do. Entertaining you makes me very happy. Before I go I just want to share a little secret and that is a quote that I carry in my back pocket and say to myself every day,

"It's your life, put your Soul into it!"

    Yours Sincerely

  21. Tory Mussett

She is a TV presenter and the lead singer in Orpheus.

    Charting success

It's Tuesday afternoon and Tory Mussett is preparing for the next taping of the Pepsi Chart show at ARQ Nightclub in Darlinghurst. There are no nerves for the talented 21-year-old, just excitement with the prospect of another full house.

"When it is really crowded, there is just an awesome atmosphere in here," she says. At every recording, between 200 and 500 people will be there. "When you get a good crowd, it makes a lot of difference to what kind of night the performers, and I, will have," Tory says. "They can really make it or break it and most of the time, the crowd can have its own personality."

During some recordings, the crowd will be over the top and people have to be asked to calm down. But, for Tory, it is all part of being a popular host. "It's more hectic, more hard work and more full on in general, but that is what makes it a big and exciting show," Tory says. Big and exciting are certainly words you could use for the Channel 10 show, especially when you consider the names that have appeared on it - Ricky Martin, Robbie Williams, Backstreet Boys, Pink, Destiny's Child, Christina Aguilera, Leah Haywood, The Whitlams, Anastacia and Kaylan.

Tory finds interviewing the stars easier than introducing them when they are about to play their set. "The crowd might put you under a little pressure, but I don't listen to them anymore," she says. "The heat [at ARQ] and the sound is much tougher, especially when the place is crowded. Tory is not a journalist by trade, so the interviews can be tough on occasions. "You think an interview is going to be easy... but then you have to find something interesting," she says.

Robbie Williams was described as "quite interesting", while the Backstreet Boys were “charming and had time for everyone", she says. "The interview process is a learning experience, I have to keep thinking, 'what's my next question going to be?'," Tory says. "You have to concentrate a lot more and it is good to be in charge of it all." With an outgoing personality and natural charm about her, it was easy to see why she was picked for the job of hosting the show. But it is more than just hosting a show that has Tory excited about Pepsi Chart. She has a passion for music, and that is shown through all sides of her personality. She is energetic, vibrant, charming, humorous and far from your average television personality. In fact, the way you see her on the show is just about real.

"I am myself on the Pepsi Chart," Tory says. "I am more natural - I wear the clothes that I want to, I know what is cool for myself and how I act is about who I am. She is also a musician, an actor and a model. For Tory, doing the show is something fun and light hearted. "It is a nice mix between performance and music," Tory says.

In the October edition of RALPH magazine, Tory was dubbed 'the Pepsi Chart chick'. She says the whole thing was quite funny and it was a title that was not taken seriously. "I think it was just good exposure for the show," she says. "It did the job, bring about an older age group and open up the market. The show is generally aimed at the younger audience, but has started to attract older viewers. At the recordings, however, the age base is mixed. Then, if she is not at ARQ taping the show, you will probably find her lying in her hammock at home writing songs or practising with her band. "Spare time is a very rare thing in my life and when I have some, I fill it up with the band," she says.

Tory is the lead singer of Orpheus and almost every spare minute she has will go into song-writing, practising or recording. "We haven't performed live [as Orpheus], but we have done a lot of gigs as other names," she says. At times, they are a rock group, but Tory says they like to play songs that everyone can enjoy. She has been playing the guitar and singing since she was 12 years old, so being in a band is just part of everyday life. "We have just been doing some writing and recording for a demo, as well as working on a big showcase to perform soon," she says.

Just say Orpheus was to be a success, who would then introduce them for their performance on Pepsi Chart? "Hey baby, that will be me," she says. "That would be ideal - maybe I could swap characters, put on a wig and jump on stage. When Tory auditioned, she had never hosted a television show before, just appeared in commercials (Lipton tea, Commonwealth Bank and Sara Lee to name a few). "I think the confidence came from being in a band," she says.

In the New Year, Tory says she is keen to continue with the show and see what happens. Further than that, she can't predict. "I'll just see what comes up next year, but I would like to get the band happening and go further into acting," she says. "But I can't really decide what I want to do - I like to do everything." If she 'really' has some spare time on her hands, Tory says she is quite an artistic person. "I love to paint and draw, and I am never satisfied unless I am creating something," she says. At present, she is making Christmas cards. But then, like many in the music industry, some of her time will be spent shopping along Oxford Street in Paddington or hunting through second-hand shops.
